Sebastien David 'Kezako'

When I visited Sebastien in 2023, I tasted through the wines as we caught up. He was telling me about his time in Georgia and various other projects he has - we tasted & I made notes. And then he poured me this wine. It was at the end of the lineup but it really stuck out! My notes say “revisit! Needs time but check in and maybe buy this wine for club”. So when I was able to revisit it, I was very excited to discover that it had mellowed out its rough edges, becoming quite elegant with a deep richness that somehow remained light on its feet and was quite compelling. I did buy it for club and now it’s on the shelves at the shop.

Did you know that Cabernet Franc is one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon? Anyway…..

2021 was a challenging year. Luckily, Sebastien has very, very old vines and a pretty magical micro-climate so while he did experience a fair bit of frost which drastically reduced his yield, most of his vines were able to recover and produce some pretty incredible fruit. With hand-picking and sorting, he was able to produce an absolutely stunning Kezako (just much less than normal).

For those who don’t know, here’s a quick refresher on our friend, Sebastien!

● 15th generation winemaker

● instrumental in the creation of Vin Méthode Nature - a designation recognized by the National Institute for Origins and Quality (INAO), the French Ministry for Agriculture and the French Fraud Control Office

● also makes wine in Georgia - mostly to explore,  support & learn the really, really old ways

● funny! kind! amazing!

This is one DELICIOUS Cabernet Franc. Dark, rich and yet light on its feet with dark violet and garnet colors dancing in the glass! Black cherries and Italian plums are balanced by notes of leather & tobacco.

The finish brings a concrete minerality but with a tiny hint of violets that uplift the wine - super textural

Some pairing ideas: grilled anything - long braises and stews! Stunningly good with grilled eggplant and tomato sauce with Caciacavello melted on the top.

THIS WINE CAN AGE!! Definitely over 5-years and probably more like 8++, if you choose to open it now, let it breathe!
Swirl & sip - let it open up and dance with you!!
