Calabretta Carricante

Carricante may be the unsung hero of ageable white wines - I mean, I’m speculating here but I think if word gets out and we start seeing collectors aging this grap,e there could be a revolution. Of course, prices would sky-rocket and that would suck so never mind (LOL!).

This amazing grape hails from the hills of Mount Etna. When grown on these volcanic soils at high elevation, the grapes are capable of producing absolutely incredible wines!! And we are lucky - in a world known for tearing out vines to replant more “popular” varietals and encouraging monoculture, natural producers especially Etna’s producers have consistently shown a desire to work with these old vines rather than uproot them and to honor the old ways of variety in the vineyards. And as we wind down another year, this brings me hope.

Also when I tasted this Carricante, I was freaking blown away!!

Coming from old vines and a family that has been farming this land for generations, these grapes bring a soulful, historical imprint to the end product. And while this is not aged, I would venture it could be! I threw a few in my cellar and will let you know for sure.

There is a subtle melon note that gives way to yellow apple & pear with fresh almonds, seashells and minerality that is carried along a wonderfully rich, structured texture with a delightful spice on the finish. There is a distinct salty smell that is classic for the volcanic white wines from Etna. And if you don’t smell it, see if you can taste it. The finish has a slight salinity to it that you may perceive as mouthwatering

A bit of a hedonistic wine that would go very well with cippino or any seafood dish!
